The Ministries of Culture and Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) are coordinating the prompt reopening of Machu Picchu, the iconic archaeological site of tourism in Peru, announced today the Minister of Culture, Alejandro Neyra.
In an interview with Andina Canal Online, the head of Culture specified that the regional and local authorities of Cusco also participate in these coordinations. He stressed that Machu Picchu is in good condition thanks to the work done by workers from the archaeological park.
“What remains is to approve the respective protocol that allows tourists to enter and flow into Machu Picchu. There is still no exact date (reopening of the archaeological site), there is still a need to coordinate between the Culture and Mincetur sectors and the regional and local authorities before restarting the visits”, he said.
He maintained that work is being carried out to determine how the sanitary protocols will be applied: the arrival of visitors to the town of Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), the transfer to the llaqta (Inka citadel) and the visits itself, which although they are in an open environment, the entrance of a large number of people will not be allowed.
“Social distancing will be respected, the compulsory use of a mask, there will be water, soap and disinfectant gel, among other measures that will be taken together with the population so that there are no sanitary problems when tourist activity resumes”, stressed.
Neyra stressed that the reopening of Machu Picchu is important for Peruvians, as a symbol of national pride and also as a budget issue, because it is one of the places that generate the most income for the Culture sector.
